Mattebela Famiglia 2008 Chardonnay is a more focused, refined version of our French style Chardonnay. This classic Chablis style wine is made from 100% Chardonnay (including predominantly French clones from Dijon, France) grown at our single vineyard on the North Fork of Long Island, N.Y. This wine enjoys ripe pear, apple and citrus flavors and has beautiful minerality with a clean, crisp refreshing finish. There is limited oak (30% barrel fermented in European oak and 70% stainless steel) and only 30% underwent malolactic fermentation.

2008 vintage was not quite as warm as the prior vintage and, therefore, the wine benefits from the retention of brighter fruit flavors and aromas, as well as more natural acidity. Its mouth watering acidity makes this wine perfect for a wide range of foods, yet it is very easy to drink on its own. Our Chardonnay was hand harvested in the third week in October, thereby enjoying a long hang time to fully ripen and develop exceptional nuances. Each clone in our vineyard was vinified and aged separately to better understand the vineyard clones before the blend is assembled prior to bottling. This is a food lover’s Chardonnay! Ivan Karp, legendary art dealer, former Met Curator, and overall bon vivant, shares his impression of Mattebella Vineyards’ wines.

“There is much more in these bottles than just some expertly fermented grape juice. Somehow the winemakers of Mattebella have infused an old world sensibility into a new world wine and – as hoaky as it sounds—they have also added a healthy dose of family love that is clearly discernable on the palate.”
